What we stands for?

Our Mission

We empower women and girls in Sierra Leone to bring about sustainable development by changing harmful social norms through the raising of awareness and education. We believe that through this mission we can help give them a dignified life.

Our Challenges

FGM has been considered a violation of human rights. It is illegal in the UK. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the practice is illegal under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 and in Scotland it is illegal under the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation (Scotland) Act 2005.
However, up to now there has never been any successful prosecution. So we need to continue to raise awareness of issues around FGM.

Sierra Leone

Hawa Trust Foundation is pioneering the education, inspiration and development of children, young people and adults in Sierra Leone in the fight against harmful cultural practices such as FGM/C. It is our aim to support the building up of local community champions.

Our Aim

Our aim is to reduce risk of girls and young women undergo FGM here in the UK and abroad. Hawa Trust work with FGM/C affected communities by raising awareness of the dangers and legal repercussions of FGM/C and associated physical, emotional and psychological effect.
Our strategy is that in the long run, girls will be fully knowledgeable on the effects of FGM/C to HIV and may be able to resist pressure to become a member of a Bondo Society.

We are focusing in civil society on the health risks of FGM/C, with more efforts to raise awareness of the practice in terms of maternal health HIV/AIDS, and obstetric fistuh.

Our Commitments

FGM has been considered a violation of human rights. It is illegal in the UK. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the practice is illegal under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003 and in Scotland it is illegal under the Prohibition of Female Genital Mutilation (Scotland) Act 2005. However, up to now there has never been any successful prosecution. So we need to continue to raise awareness of issues around FGM.
