Who we are?

Hawa Trust is a local charity foundation that works with different people and organisations in the fighting against FGM/C related with HIV and order harmful abuse to women and girls. Our aim is to reduce risk of girls and young women undergo FGM here in the UK, Sierra Leone and abroad. Hawa Trust is the only FGM organisation of its type that is based in Hackney, East London.

We also work and network in Sierra Leone where we empower women and girls in to bring about sustainable development by changing harmful social norms through raising of awareness and education. We believe that through this mission we can help give them a dignified life and managing different practices.

What do we do?

Female Gentile Mutilation (FGM)

FGM is practised in about 28 African countries, the Middle East and South East Asia. The African countries with the highest prevalence rates of over 90% are Somalia, Sudan, Djibouti, Egypt, Guinea and Sierra Leone. We develop strategic partnerships with community-based organisations, to develop their technical capacity, and build local support networks for African women and girls in the UK and Sierra Leone.

Early Child Marriage

We focuses more on raising awareness and stopping early child marriage in Sierra Leone due to lack of resources and education. Sierra Leone has the 19th highest child marriage rate in the world, with 13% of girls married by age 15, and 39% by age 18 therefore our aim is to actioned to inspire women and girls to dream more, learn more and educate them to become future leaders.

Referrals are welcome both in the UK and Sierra Leone, we have organisations, centres and communities were refer individuals to get support. We provide emotional support as well as supporting you to access health care to help you maintain your physical and emotional wellbeing. Community Engagement

We engage in various activities such as charity work, events, training and workshops for FGM survivals and provide support to them.  Hawa Trust also run a monthly support group for FGM survivors. Hawa Trust provide confidential, one-to-one, non-judgemental support based on your needs.

HIV

Although there are high levels of HIV awareness among adults (over 94%), uptake in voluntary HIV testing has remained low (<30%), and under one-third (29%) of the country’s 60,000 people living with HIV/AIDS were on antiretroviral therapy in 2015. Our aim and commitment is to continue raising awareness, educating individual and provide support to manage the condition and their wellbeing.

Education and Awareness

Hawa Trust Foundation says education is one of the biggest challenges that we need to conquer and implement change, therefore we aim to tackle it early with technology and connect our women and girls through the internet advancement. We will continue to speak with different bodies, communities and organisations to educate women for their betterment and safety.

Our commitments in Sierra Leone

We visit villages, communities and cutters to raise awareness to stop FGM in the country. We also provide training, workshops, provide resources and food supply to vulnerable people including women, girls and their parents.

39% of girls in Sierra Leone are married before their 18th birthday which UNFPA have have linked to poverty, lack of education and geographical area.

Natural disaster

In the event of natural disaster such as fire, mudslide, ebola and those affected by any natural causes we render our support and donate provisions to help them out. We work with vulnerable communities and people that needed the help, we provide resources such as food, money and clothing items.

Women behind bars

Approximately, 116 women per 100,000 Sierra Leonean nationals are in prison where they suffer from over-cramping, a lack of clean facilities and unjust treatment due to lower economic status, limited political power and socially marginalized roles.

Teenage pregnancy

Teenage pregnancy in Sierra Leone is a national and community-wide problem, with a prevalence of 68% pregnancy rate among sexually experienced teenage girls, with an incredibly young mean age of just 15 years old (UNICEF, 2013).

Many women in Sierra Leone are victims to various forms of domestic violence including physical, economic and emotional/psychological abuse. Much of the abuse is perpetuated by outdated social norms, culture and beliefs.
